Though the film centers on the true story of the spectacular downfall of Toronto mayor Rob Ford, it’s really about recently-graduated young people who find themselves in the midst of this larger-than-life scandal. Each twenty-something protagonist struggles to navigate what have now become standard Millennial clichés: there are few jobs to be found and the ones that are available seem to be a dead-end in terms of career growth; there are impossibly huge student loans that don’t seem as though they will ever possibly be paid back; there is a great fear that young people will never be able to come out of a strange extended adolescence where they are still relying on their parents rather than moving out and starting families of their own; there are jokes about how their generation should maybe just quit the $4 lattes. Advertisement This is well-trod territory in 2020, explored richly in any number of TV shows and films, and the choice to center “Run This Town” on Millennial malaise is an odd one, made all the more perplexing by the fact that director Ricky Tollman decided to center his story mostly on two fictional male Millennial characters, rather than the real-life reporter Robyn Doolittle, who spent years covering Ford’s various scandals before finding herself with video footage of Ford smoking crack. Clearly, Tollman’s reporter isn’t meant to be a stand-in for Doolittle. Bram ( Ben Platt) is a completely fictional character, an inexperienced reporter who struggles with the work. He wants to do something big and important but is only asked to write clickbait in the form of goofy lists. When he suddenly gets the opportunity to write about something really big and important, he ultimately botches it. In this way, Bram fits Tollman’s vision for the film, which is less a recounting of the scandal itself than a look at how young people navigate the treacherous waters of making good choices in a world that doesn’t seem to have any moral compass at all. Tollman explores this overarching theme by comparing Bram’s experiences trying to break the story with the story of Kamal ( Mena Massoud), the assistant to Mayor Ford ( Damian Lewis), whose job involves basically cleaning up after the mayor’s wildly unethical antics, which include bullying, assault, and sexual harassment. He’s an expert spinner who is also increasingly weary of his role in covering for not just immoral, but also illegal behavior. Likewise, the film also looks at how lawyer and press assistant Ashley ( Nina Dobrev) is faced with a similar conundrum of whether to report how Ford has been sexually harassing her as well as abusing other workers in the vicinity. Including all of these various experiences is certainly ambitious, but the screenplay itself isn’t terribly interesting. As a viewer, I wanted to learn more about real-life story of Ford, rather than see so many scenes where characters discuss their more general struggles making strides as adults. Throughout the film, Ford’s behavior, which should be in the foreground of this story, seems to curiously fade to the back. Part of this is because Tollman flattens Ford into a kind of caricature, a #MeToo monster who flagrantly assaults employees and yells when things don’t go his way. Certainly, Ford’s real-life behavior makes it clear that he is not a person with whom the audience should be particularly empathetic, and yet to make a whole movie about Rob Ford without genuinely focusing on his arc as mayor (or a more in-depth look at the city that elected him) seems to be missing a major part of the story. Upon learning about the movie, Doolittle tweeted her shock and disappointment about being written out of the retelling, “ Why have a woman be a lead character when a man could do it? ” she quipped. It’s clear when watching the film that Tollman wasn’t in any way trying to erase Doolittle’s work or avoid writing interesting female characters (“Run This Town” includes several female protagonists who are written with sensitivity and depth) but it’s also unclear what exactly was gained by taking out her story in order to re-orient the plot around an inexperienced white, male reporter. Tollman’s choice is all the more perplexing when considering the ways that his film’s subjects could have been explored more deeply by actually bringing in Doolittle’s story. After all, the tale of how an ambitious female reporter successfully exposed a corrupt mayor would only enhance all the themes that Tollman seems most invested in unpacking—entitlement, corruption, ambition, what it means to take responsibility. These are hugely important issues in our current moment, especially when thinking about the ways that so much journalism seems to be shaped by the drive for quick clickbait over substantial storytelling. By editing out Doolittle, I think Tollman intended to make his story a more concise and elegant treatise on the Millennial experience. In 2013, The Toronto Star and Gawker both said their reporters had watched a video that appeared to show Toronto’s mayor, Rob Ford, smoking crack. Six months later, he admitted to having used the drug, but did not resign. Bram (Ben Platt), a young journalist who writes listicles for a Toronto news outlet, is clearly out of his depth when he meets a potential source who wants to sell him the video. The movie, which ends with Bram delivering a self-righteous, mostly unmotivated defense of his generation’s work ethic, takes a weirdly sympathetic attitude toward his stumbles. The film is much sharper at city hall, where the two other major characters work. Kamal (Mena Massoud), the special assistant to the mayor, gleefully demonstrates his reporter-stonewalling strategies to Ashley (Nina Dobrev), a new press aide. She eagerly runs interference for the mayor until he shows up at work drunk and grabs her lewdly. Damian Lewis plays Ford, whose name is not changed, in a surprisingly effective feat of prosthetics. Making energetic use of split screens, the writer-director Ricky Tollman shows a gift for staccato cutting and clipped dialogue, as in a spirited discussion of terminology at city hall. An involving and ambitious fictionalized look at Rob Ford's downfall that is far from satisfied with gawking at that Toronto trainwreck, Ricky Tollman's Run This Town also intends to make points about racism and sexual harassment; to lament the slow-motion death of journalism; and to give voice to a generation of young adults who've been maligned by the oldsters who, as the movie sees it, made them the way they are. The feature debut for Tollman (whose executive producers include J. C. Chandor), it's a self-consciously thwarted All the President's Men whose strong air of self-pity may lead some viewers to go easy on certain failings: Like Ford, the crack-smoking boor who convinced millions of voters to love him, it knows perfection isn't an option, so it doesn't strain to iron out its quirks. Ben Platt plays the oddly named Bram, a recent hire at a newspaper that, surprisingly, isn't fictional. (Surprising because few outlets would embrace being depicted as washed-up papers that rely more and more on pandering listicles. ) Despite having shown promise in college (several references are made to the undergraduate award he won), Bram is assigned at The Record to churn out pieces about the top 10 hot dogs in town, or coffee shops, or whatever. After a year, he's increasingly vocal about his impatience to be put on an actual reporting beat. Though early scenes observe Bram in both moments of douchey pushiness and cringey punsmanship, it's clear that on some level Tollman likes the dude, and shares the character's sense that the world isn't being nice enough to him. What the film isn't doing is what some claimed when the production was announced: Tollman hasn't rewritten the Ford scandal to excise the part female journalists played and suggest a lone male reporter brought the mayor to account by himself. In fact, when they take a step back from the pic, viewers will realize that this entitled white male actually plays no part at all in Ford's downfall; he only tries to, and his efforts are clumsy despite their sincerity. That reality is underlined by a closing scene in which Bram defends his generation against negative stereotypes: Bram isn't shy about wanting his participation ribbon, when really he should just be thrilled about being allowed to participate in paid journalism in 2013, ribbon or no. While chronicling Bram's dogged but largely ineffectual attempts to get evidence of Ford's drug use, the movie also looks at the young professionals tasked with enabling the substance-abusing mayor, played by Damian Lewis. There's his Special Assistant, Kamal (Mena Massoud), who overlooks many sins because he so admires the politician's willingness to go out personally to solve constituents' problems. Kamal never complains that his boss thinks his name is "Camel, " or that, while exploiting local anti-immigrant sentiment, he behaves as if his underling is "one of the good ones. " Kamal accepts mistreatment that is more pervasive but less egregious than that suffered by Nina Dobrev's Ashley. Staggering drunkenly into the office one night with an entourage of partying sleazebags, Ford gropes Ashley for all to see and makes lewd comments. Only now does the young woman choose to stop ignoring other credible reports of his sexual harassment, deciding to help Bram (and maybe others) get the evidence they need for stories about Ford's drug use. Tollman's often engaging script takes a couple of uncomfortable lurches, as when it leaps from the start of Bram's investigation to the point at which local police detectives (led by Gil Bellows' Detective Lowey) start interviewing people about a video showing Ford smoking crack with local youths. The screenplay also fails to convince on some fronts — for instance, newsroom monologues in which Bram's embittered or cynical superiors lash out as if encapsulating all the self-loathing generated in a decade or so of journalistic decline. For some, the film's most distracting element will be the fat suit worn by Lewis, which makes Mayor Ford look a bit like Fat Bastard of the Austin Powers franchise. But there's an empathetic performance buried under all that latex, one that understands how a good-ol'-boy politician, faced with the end of his career, might be most worried about the prospect that he'll no longer be allowed to coach youth sports leagues. A movie that narrowed its focus, playing this penny-ante potentate against a green reporter in a catastrophe-hit industry, would likely have fared better than one grasping at so many aspects of Millennial frustration. But Run This Town is true to its protagonist's self-centeredness, caring less about history or journalism than a generation's sense that they've been screwed. To which several older groups of viewers will reply, "Welcome to the club, kid.
